What is Youth Corps?
New Jersey's Youth Corps is one of the largest youth service
and conservation corps in the United States. Established
in 1984, the mission of Youth Corps is to "restore and
preserve the dignity of young adults who have been underserved."
Today's Youth Corps is directly descended from the Civilian
Conservation Corps of the 1930's that built so many of
our nation's parks and other public facilities which are
still in use today. Monmouth County's Youth Corps is proud
to be counted among the nations one hundred and thirteen
Service and Conservation Corps that operate in forty-one
states and the District of Columbia. The Monmouth County
Youth Corps is one of twelve Youth Corps in the State
of New Jersey.
Monmouth County Youth Corps
The Monmouth County Youth Corps is sponsored by Interfaith
Neighbors, Inc., a non-profit agency whose commitment
to providing high quality services with the care and understanding
of a neighbor is well established within Monmouth county
and surrounding areas. Interfaith Neighbors expanded the
reach of the Asbury Park Youth Corps program from city-wide
to county-wide in order to serve as many youth as possible.
This program serves young men and women between the ages
of 16 and 25 who have not been able to complete high school.
Orientations are two weeks long and are held periodically throughout the year for new Youth Corps participants. During orientation the youth engage in team building activities, assessments, field trips and various activities that build Corps unity and pride. The year-round, voluntary program includes components that provide the means for youth to obtain the skills necessary for future academic and/or career success. It provides an individualized educational component that helps Corps members work toward taking a G.E.D. (General Educational Development) test or helps them advance one grade level by program completion. The program engages young adults in community service projects, life skills and employability skills training, and offers counseling support.
The Youth Corp program operates Monday through Friday, 8:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at our site at 810 Fourth Ave. Asbury
Park, N.J. If you know of any youth between the ages of
sixteen and twenty-five who have dropped out of high school,
we would like to meet with them. Please contact
us today to inquire about our next orientation dates.
