Come join us as we learn a bit more about the harmful effects of plastic and why we should “skip the straw” and go plastic free!

We will make a take home craft!

A class taught by Miss Michelle Morey:

Skip the straw and save a turtle! Keeping one single straw from making it to the ocean won’t fix the problem, but imagine if everyone said “No straw, please”! Beginning on November 4, 2021, food service businesses shall only provide a single-use plastic straw to a customer upon request.

Turtles (and other animals) may mistake plastic bags for food. Turtles like to eat jellyfish, and we think turtles eat the plastic bags because they resemble jellyfish. When turtles eat plastic, it can block their intestinal system (their guts). Therefore, they can no longer eat properly, which can kill them. Plastic bags are petroleum-based and do not biodegrade. ... Sea turtles and other marine creatures mistake plastics and other garbage as food (such as jellyfish) and ingest it. This mistake causes blockages within their digestive system and eventual death. Plastic is made from unsustainable fossil fuels and every piece ever made is still in our environment and toxic to marine life. Plastics impact marine life through entanglement, poisoning and starvation. It's difficult to recycle straws so they end up in our landfills and oceans.

   

Michele Morey is an elementary school teacher with the Long Branch School District. In addition to teaching second grade, she is also the head Green Team leader at her school. Her passion for the environment has been extended to the children that she started a Green Team with, with teachings of environmental issues. Children are taught about their environment, nature around them, native plants, birds and insects, what they can do to not waste food, how to reuse and recycle and to simply install a love to this beautiful earth! Students are encouraged to use their voice and are taught at a very young age how they can make a difference in our world.  Students are also informed of the climate change topics and how they too are leaving a footprint.
