All about Bats!

In this class you'll learn all about bats and have the opportunity to Build a Bat House. 

The class will be held in Kula's heated greenhouse, please register below (free).

We'll start the class with a talk from Kathleen Kerwin from Rutgers' Wildlife Conservation and Management Program, she'll teach you all about bats and will be able to answer all your bat questions.  And if you decide to stay to build a bat house ($25.-), she'll stay around to entertain you with some nice bat facts and will also be able to help you find the best place to hang it.

With a little help from Rutgers and a lot of help from our job trainees, the Kula team has been perfecting their own bat house design for this Build a Bat House Workshop.

Bats need our help. Bats usually find shelter in dead trees, but those are hard to find nowadays. Bats eat a ton of insects around dusk, just when those pesky mosquitoes come out. So, let's help them find some shelter this summer. They especially like properties that are close to a lake and our own Deal Lake happens to be the biggest lake in New Jersey!

If you decide to purchase the bat house kit for $25.- in our online store you'll be constructing a small roosting box. It will be too small for a permanent colony, but big enough for a nice temporary shelter. The bat house will be made out of a single wood board, that will be precut in the right sizes for you. All further necessary tools and materials will be provided. You can build it all by yourself, or bring a friend to help you. Four hands will make it easier than two. We'll also be there to assist. Minors should be accompanied by an adult.

Kathleen Kerwin, M.S., received her B.S. and M.S. in Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources from Rutgers University in 2012 and 2014 respectively. She has a strong background in wildlife monitoring and management with project experience throughout the United States. Kathleen joined the Wildlife Conservation and Management Program in 2015, and her responsibilities include program management, development of educational programs, and delivery of extension services.

The class is free, the bat house kit is optional, you can buy the kit in our online store until March 17.
